The Demak Sultanate was the first major Muslim kingdom on the island of Java, Indonesia, established by Raden Patah in the late 15th century (around 1475–1478), on the north coast where the modern city of Demak is located.globalsecurity+3

  • Origins and Rise: Demak began as a port town under the Hindu-Buddhist Majapahit empire but gained independence as Majapahit declined. Islam arrived primarily via Muslim traders from China, Gujarat, and Arabia, and Demak quickly emerged as a center for expanding the new religion.kids.kiddle+1

  • Significance: Under Raden Patah and later sultans, Demak rapidly gained power, dominating Java’s northern coast and southern Sumatra. It played a key role in spreading Islam through Java and the Indonesian archipelago, both by conquest and through proselytization.journal.uny+2

  • Political and Religious Center: The Demak Sultanate became not only a political power but also a religious one, attracting Islamic scholars (notably the Walisongo) and establishing mosques, including the famous Demak Great Mosque.journal.uny

  • Demak–Majapahit Conflict: Demak led the overthrow of the Majapahit empire, marking the replacement of Hindu-Buddhist rule by Islam in Java.javaprivatetour+2

  • Decline: Following internal power struggles after the death of Sultan Trenggana (mid-1500s), Demak’s influence faded. By 1568, the capital was moved to Pajang, and Demak effectively ended as a major power.wikipedia+1

Legacy: Despite its brief existence (about a century), Demak is remembered as the cradle of Islamic power in Java and a primary force in the Islamization of Indonesia.kids.kiddle+2

Apabila anak adam (manusia) telah meninggal dunia, maka terputuslah amalnya darinya, kecuali tiga perkara, yaitu sedekah jariyah (sedekah yang pahalanya terus mengalir), ilmu yang bermanfaat, anak saleh yang selalu mendoakannya.” (HR Muslim No. 1631
